Oterra Partners With HowGood to Put Carbon Footprints on Natural Colors

Natural color maker Oterra will use HowGood's sustainability data to give customers product carbon footprints for selected colors, to support Scope 3 reporting.

Brands switching to natural colors want to know more than shade and stability. Now one of the largest natural color producers is adding carbon data to the list.

TLDR

  • Oterra has partnered with sustainability data firm HowGood.
  • HowGood will provide product carbon footprints for selected Oterra colors.
  • Customers can use the data for their own Scope 3 emissions reporting.
  • The move comes the same week Oterra’s new CEO takes over.

What the Partnership Does

Oterra announced on October 8 that HowGood will provide product carbon footprints for selected products in its natural color portfolio. The goal is to help customers “measure and reduce carbon emissions across their supply chains,” and to support their Scope 3 reporting and decarbonization work.

HowGood describes itself as having “the world’s largest database on food product sustainability.” Oterra has not said which products are covered first.

What the Companies Say

“Our customers are looking for greater transparency across their supply chains,” said Vera Karmeback, head of global sustainability at Oterra. “This partnership with HowGood provides the transparency, data and methodology needed to drive decarbonization.”

“Granular sustainability metrics are no longer a nice-to-have for food companies,” said Rachel Calomeni, senior vice president of growth and innovation at HowGood.

The partnership supports Oterra’s 2030 Sustainability Strategy, built on three pillars: nature, climate and people.

Why It Matters

Last week, GNT announced independent verification of the carbon footprint method behind its EXBERRY colors. Now Oterra is adding product-level carbon data too. For brands replacing synthetic dyes, emissions data is becoming part of how natural color suppliers compete, alongside performance, cost and supply. Oterra’s new chief executive, Susanne Arfelt Rajamand, starts on October 12.
