Danone’s AI Shopping Goal: ‘Trusted by Machines and Desired by Humans’

Danone North America is aligning its product data so AI shopping agents trust its brands. Inconsistent data weakens authority on Google and ChatGPT, its digital VP says.

Kraft Heinz automated its product listings. SPINS launched a tool to measure AI visibility. Now Danone is explaining how it wants AI shopping agents to see brands like Oikos, Activia and Silk.

TLDR

  • Danone North America wants its brands trusted by AI agents that shop for consumers.
  • Its digital teams had been working separately, creating inconsistent product data.
  • Inconsistent data lowers a brand’s authority on Google and ChatGPT, its digital VP says.
  • Getting the teams aligned has been its biggest recent win.

The Goal

“We want to be trusted by machines and desired by humans,” Arthur Sylvestre, Danone North America’s vice president of media and digital, said at Groceryshop, as reported by FoodNavigator. Danone’s brands include Oikos, Activia, Silk and International Delight.

The Problem

Danone’s online portal and digital shipment teams had been working separately, which created inconsistencies between what traditional search and AI tools saw. “Without any consistency, you’re actually decreasing the level of authority that you’re going to get on Google or on ChatGPT,” Sylvestre said. Getting everyone aligned “was a long process,” he said, but it is now the company’s biggest recent win.

He also warned marketers about chasing “shiny objects” without a strategy, and said digital teams need to “speak business with a digital accent.”

Why It Matters

When an AI agent fills a grocery cart, it chooses based on product data. Claims like high protein, no artificial colors or live cultures only count if they are consistent everywhere the machine looks. For food brands, data hygiene is becoming a marketing job.
