SciPinion Launches AI Tool to Benchmark Ingredients Against FDA GRAS Precedents

SciPinion's SciBridge Safety Suite compares new ingredients to FDA-cleared GRAS notices, ahead of a proposed rule that would make notification mandatory.

Proving an ingredient is safe can take months and cost a fortune. SciPinion says artificial intelligence (AI) can cut part of that work to about ten minutes.

TLDR

  • SciPinion launched the SciBridge Safety Suite.
  • It compares new ingredients against FDA-cleared GRAS notices.
  • A full similarity report takes about ten minutes.
  • It arrives ahead of a proposed rule making GRAS notification mandatory.

How SciBridge Works

SciPinion, based in Bozeman, Montana, built the software on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) inventory of GRAS notices. GRAS stands for “generally recognized as safe.” The suite has three parts. Browse indexes the database with side-by-side comparisons. Screen ranks a new substance against precedent notices. Bridge runs a field-by-field evaluation against up to three comparators, with downloadable reports.

The company says SciBridge “can generate a full similarity report against an FDA-cleared precedent in about ten minutes.” CEO Sean Hays, PhD, said that work “can otherwise take months and run into hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

The Regulatory Clock

FDA published a proposed rule on August 11, 2026, that would make GRAS notification mandatory. Public comments are due December 9. The rule would exempt ingredients that match existing FDA “no questions” letters. It does not define how companies should show that similarity.

Companies need “a standard, documented method, applied the same way every time,” said Vanessa Feher Castagna, PhD, director of food safety and claims at SciPinion.

Why It Matters

If self-affirmed GRAS ends, many ingredients will need a documented path to market. SciPinion estimates tens of thousands of substitutional ingredients depend on equivalence to existing notices. Tools that standardize that comparison could shape how fast reformulated products launch.
